Smith-Trahern Mansion recently held its annual Sweetheart Cake Bake, a fun and delicious fundraiser that raises money for the preservation and restoration of Clarksville's historic mansion.
Debby Johnson has been Mansion Director since 2009. “This is our 35th annual Sweetheart Cake Bake,” Johnson said. “This year we had more than 100 entries. Each year, local businesses and individuals sponsor cakes, other good folks bake the cakes, and then the finished products are brought in to be judged on appearance, consistency, and most importantly, flavor.”
There were ten categories for this year's various entries, including cheesecake, coconut cake, coffee cake, and seven other categories..
A winner was chosen in each category, and the winners received a ribbon. From those winners, a second round of judging determines the grand prize winner.
“In the main hall, all the bakers are treated to a luncheon,” Johnson said. It's an afternoon of great food, entertainment, and a little education.”
While the bakers were out front having fun, the judges suffered through the daunting task of tasting dozens of delicious cakes and choosing a favorite. This year's Grand Prize winning cake was created by Michael Lankford.
