Community members gathered recently at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library to celebrate the completion of a three-year project, the Clarksville-Montgomery County African American Legacy Trail.
The Legacy Trail is a downtown walking trail and county drive honoring African-American history and leadership within the area. The trail includes 17 locations of historical significance and three world-builders who had international and national influence.
While researching African American history in Clarksville for a different project, Shana Thornton, Legacy Trail creator and director, was inspired to create the trail when she realized nothing like this existed.
The African American Legacy Trail brochures may be found at the Clarksville-Montgomery County Visitor Center, 180 Holiday Drive; the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, 25 Jefferson St., Suite 300; and Clarksville-Montgomery County School System å Services, 621 Gracey Ave.
